For two days this month a workshop took place at Assemblage with 23 artists. They were asked to be inspired by children’s drawings that were drawn over the last year for The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. The artists each produced a minimum of 20 artworks which will feed into a larger work called The Story Screen. Children will have intimate moments with the drawings from these artists which will be plasma cut out of sheet steel and inserted at the back end of pipes. The artists’ approached this project with ease and a complete understanding of the intention. As Bongi Dhlomo (overall curator of the project) explains:
The ease with which established artists have immersed themselves in the transcription and interpretation of kids’ artworks and with so much enthusiasm and none of the ego that is generally associated with artists gives me so much hope.
From The Coloured Cube - a big THANK YOU to Assemblage and the artists for being involved and being so positive towards this project, we can’t wait to show you the outcomes!
