Dear Art Practitioner

During their 1 year studio bursary, conversations between Grace Mokalapa and Pebofatso Mokoena have revealed that it has become apparent that Johannesburg, as a social, political and subliminal environment, brings out feelings of ambivalence, joys and anxieties, which in some instances seem to have had an effect in both the artist's works both consciously and subconsciously.

These relational feelings to the city affect every individual on and in unique ways. This is evidently so in the works of many art practitioners living and working in Johannesburg in some form or another. From these conversations the two artists have found it interesting in how artistic practitioners have reacted to a multifaceted space such as Jozi, so much so, that they have decided to create a public event/platform in which art practitioners can discuss, (re)discover, (dis)connect and explore deeply personal and authentic experiences of living, moving and working in this cosmopolitan city. These experiences may or may not have had an affect on each of the works and how we express ourselves/themselves, however these experiences affect how we view ourselves in connection to our surroundings and therefore are never truly separate from our forms of expression. With this in mind, Pebo and Mmabatho invite you to share on these perspectives of art practitioners in a public hangout, aimed at sharing sensitivities from urban dwellers, and how that may or may not influence different forms of expressions in this city of Gold.
