Assemblage relocates and creates new ‘artist hub’ in heritage building at 1 Marshall Street

Assemblage relocates from Newtown to Ferreirasdorp next to growing cultural hub The Sheds@1Fox, to develop new ‘artist hub’ comprising of a meeting place for artists, artist studios, exhibition space and printmaking workshop.

Johannesburg, South Africa, 18 February 2016 - For Assemblage, 2016 will be a year of exciting growth and change. The non-profit arts organisation, which was founded in 2010, aims for the visual arts community of Johannesburg to connect, to share ideas, information and advice and to collaborate. It provides a support network, platform for exchange and exposure, and development opportunities which enables artists to be their best and to pursue professional careers as artists.

After 4 years of successfully running artist studios in Newtown, which has supported the careers of countless artists, Assemblage has decided to move to a new space which will allow them the opportunity to provide exhibition space, a professional printmaking workshop as well as more affordable studios for artists. Assemblage will continue to run activities, which are essential to the mission of the organisation, such as a mentorship programme and career development workshops at the new space. Prints on Paper - Assemblage’s partner company - will also be located within the new artist hub and will continue to provide a printmaking studio for artists, printmaking workshop opportunities and excellent quality prints for purchase.

The triple-volume space, which will house the new artist hub, was built in 1904, is a registered heritage building and used to be a cinema. Assemblage is excited to be a part of the ever-growing cultural precinct of The Sheds@1Fox which includes an artisan market (open Wed-Sun), a brewery (opening soon) a bar and an a buzzing events space.

While Assemblage is sad to say goodbye to their space in Newtown, they are excited for the new opportunities that the new artist hub will offer.

Please join us on 30 March 2016 for the closing party at 41 Gwi Gwi Mrwebi at 18:00.

Assemblage can be found at 1 Marshall Street, Ferreirasdorp from 1 April 2016.
