Assemblage seeks an intern for assistance with the overall administration of and day to day running of Assemblage and the newly opened Newtown Artist Run Centre and Studios (NewARC). The intern will gain a huge amount of experience in art administration, gain insight into the workings of the Johannesburg visual arts industry and become a part of a vibrant artistic community and network. The intern will work closely with the Assemblage trustees and will be trained to understand the processes needed to run a non-profit organisation such as Assemblage and an artist-run centre (NewARC).

Skills that will be gained by the intern include:

  • industry research
  • event and project management, including the planning and implementation of Assemblage’s peer mentoring, workshops, open studios and exhibitions
  • database management
  • basic office administration.

The intern will also be encouraged to brainstorm and initiate their own projects, with the support of the organisation.

The appropriate candidate must:

  • be ambitious, able to take initiative, and willing to learn.
  • be self-motivated and able to work on their own, whilst also able to take direction and meet deadlines and required outcomes.
  • have basic computer skills, writing and communication skills. (Knowledge of Microsoft Office is a must. Knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign is desired but not necessary)
  • be friendly, committed, enthusiastic and well presented.
  • have experience and/or interest in the visual arts.

  • have own transport and laptop (prefered but not essential)

The internship is for a period of 9 months starting in April 2013 and ending in December 2013. The intern will be required to commit to either 4 mornings or 4 afternoons a week working with Assemblage at the NewARC Studios (this is negotiable). The intern will receive a stipend of R3000/month.

Interested persons should email the following to info@assemblage.co.za by no later than 1 March 2013:
