Assemblage Update August 2018

Posted: 13 Aug 2018

Thank you to all those who have supported us over the last few months and who have attended our events.

We have run a series of successful project exhibitions over two spaces in Braamfontein - 68 Juta St and 153 Smit Street. Thank you to Play Braamfontein for the use of their spaces and their support. Thank you to the artists who worked hard and put together each project so professionally. Thank you to sponsors and partners, The African Arts Trust and Norman Goodfellows.

So, what next for Assemblage and where to from here?

After six years of running studio spaces - four years in Newtown and two years in the 1Fox precinct, we decided to close the studios to focus our attention on how Assemblage could be of greater value to our community. When we opened studios in 2012, there was a desperate need for artist studios. But in the last three years 10-15 new studio complexes have opened and that need is no longer as great. We are constantly trying to understand the needs of the visual arts community. In speaking with people and doing preliminary research, we found that the top needs included; project spaces, exhibition opportunities, mentorship and skills development, networking and connecting of artists. At present, we envision Assemblage as an agile and nomadic space - moving from activity to activity and occupying different locations. We hope to act as a space, a hub and an incubator where artists can grow, learn, professionalise and be the best artists they can be.

The first phase of this process began through our series of project exhibitions.

Next up is a series of events and activities in a variety of spaces both physical and virtual covering a variety of opportunities. More information will be shared on this soon.

Watch out for our open call for our 2019 Talent Unlocked programme in partnership with the Visual Arts Network of South Africa, supported by Rand Merchant Bank and Turbine Art Fair.

We have grown hugely as an organisation since we started in 2010. Our team of people and supporters has grown incredibly too. In the last year and a half we have introduced an advisory board to assist with our major decisions; we have a new trustee on board - Lakin Morgan-Baatjies and our new Business Director, Kim Sanssoucie began working with us several months ago and has been integral in helping us to define our strategy moving forward.

There is so much excitement ahead of us, we are looking forward to sharing the journey with you.
