Assemblage is pleased to announce the offering of three bursary places for studios made possible by The African Arts Trust for 2015/2016.

In April 2012 non-profit organisation Assemblage opened the Assemblage Studios in Newtown, Johannesburg, South Africa, with the aim of creating an artist-run initiative that supports the visual arts community of Johannesburg, benefits the industry and gives artists the space to fulfil their potential.

Assemblage encourages the artists within the Assemblage Studios to pursue art making as a full-time career thereby cultivating entrepreneurs and employment. The broader Johannesburg visual arts community have regular access to the space through peer mentoring sessions and workshops, as well as the general public through art events including exhibitions, open studio events and art talks. It is a physical hub for activity, creation, collaboration and discourse.

As of September 2015 Assemblage will have three studio spaces to offer to 3 worthy applicants. Artists who are serious about their careers but who are limited by their resources and are in need of support and community are invited to apply for an Assemblage studio bursary.

In order to be considered for a bursary, please email with the following:

  • One page motivation letter, which details how you intend to spend your year at the Assemblage Studios and how a bursary would help you to achieve your goal of being an artist
  • A proposal of what you will give back to the visual arts community during your bursary year. This would ideally be a skills sharing workshop for the broader Johannesburg visual arts community.
  • Full CV (with at least 2 references)
  • An artist statement
  • 10 images of your work

Recipients of bursaries will receive a studio space at the Assemblage Studios from September 2015 - August 2016, internet access, resources, support and mentoring from Assemblage. In addition, bursary recipients will be required to donate one artwork to The African Arts Trust’s collection at the end of the bursary period and to collaborate with Assemblage in organising one workshop or similar event during the bursary time period. Bursary artists will also be expected to put together a group exhibition of their work at the end of their bursary period.

Deadline for applications is 19 August 2015. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered. Successful applicants will be notified by 30 August 2015 and will be able to move into the studios at the beginning of September 2015.
