Assemblage is pleased to announce that the Newtown Artist Run Centre and Studios (NewARC) has been open for a year. Come celebrate with us at our next open studio on 15 May 2013 from 17:30 - 20:30.
Please join us for a glass of wine and pizza provided by Primi Piatti and view the work of resident artists.
There will be music by unscene (DJ).
Phumulani Ntuli will be doing a site-specific performance at 18:30.
The performance titled 'Life of Marikana' is a fictional, site-specific video and performance project investigating the events of the 16th of August 2012 when South Africa witnessed the atrocious Marikana Bloodshed. The event unfolded and gained momentum while miners who were on strike were killed by police. The “Marikana massacre”, as it was dubbed by the press, is one of the examples reflecting the South African socio-political conflicts and the post-colonial violence since the end of the apartheid era (source: Wikipedia).
The performance is based on the subject of Marikana and analyses 'her' life story as it unfolds through experimental video and performance interventions in the city. The series of site-specific interventions will begin with the birth of Marikana and will continue, over the coming months, until her death.
All resident artists will be present in their studios and the public will have the opportunity to view and purchase artwork, speak to artists about their process and to be part of the NewARC community for an evening.
Assemblage aims to hold regular open studio events at the NewARC. As part of upholding its vision for the NewARC to be an artist-run centre, Assemblage welcomes proposals for talks, discussions, performance or events to occur at these events that broaden and enrich the Johannesburg visual arts community.
