Rebecca Haysom was born in Johannesburg in 1983. She completed her BAFA at Michealis, UCT, in 2005. Rebecca returned to Johannesburg in 2010, to complete her honours in English Literature at the University of Witwatersrand.
Rebecca now works from her studio at NewARC in Newtown, and has a permanent exhibition space at Rubixcube at Arts on Main in Maboneng. Her work has appeared in numerous group shows in both Johannesburg and Cape Town
Rebecca’s focus is on figurative oil painting, with excursions in watercolour, drawing, and printmaking. She thinks of her work as a collection of ‘characters in search of an author’. Images culled from newspapers, personal photographs, the Internet, art history, and the pages of literature, are re-invented to become fragments of a wry narrative. Often referencing the traditional genre of portrait painting and self-portraits, she is interested in interrogating the mechanisms of biography, and the creation of ‘selves’ through storytelling.
